Every so often a mill releases a fabric that changes what a bespoke tailor can offer for summer. Loro Piana’s Lightest is one of those releases . A Super 150’s wool and silk cloth built for the months when most tailoring gives up and reaches for linen instead.

What „Lightest“ actually is?

The name is on the label for a reason. Loro Piana developed Lightest by blending extra-fine Super 150’s merino with pure silk thread, producing a cloth that keeps the crispness and drape of a proper suiting wool while shedding most of its weight. Bunches in the line typically finish in the mid-200 gram range per metre , roughly half the heft of a classic year-round worsted which is what allows the jacket to move with the body instead of sitting on top of it.

The „660“ printed on the swatch card isn’t a weight or a fiber count; it’s the pattern reference inside Loro Piana’s Lightest bunch book, the number a tailor or mill rep uses to reorder that exact colorway. Worth knowing, since it’s easy to mistake for a spec.

Why the Super number matters?

  • Super 150’s refers to fiber fineness, not durability  the higher the number, the finer the wool micron, and the softer and more fluid the resulting cloth.
  • Silk in the blend adds a subtle sheen and helps the fabric breathe, without the wrinkling you’d get from a linen-heavy cloth.
  • Fine wool still needs care a light hand with pressing and steaming, not raw heat, keeps the fibers from flattening out over time.

This is the direction LoroPiana’s whole mill has been leaning for years pushing the limits of how light a fabric can go without losing the structure that makes tailoring look like tailoring. It’s the same instinct behind the house’s newer Royal Lightness silk-cashmere, just built here for the demands of a suit rather than a coat.

How it wears?

On the body, Lightest reads closer to a soft-shouldered Neapolitan jacket than a boardroom suit, it drapes rather than holds a hard line, which makes it forgiving in warm weather and easy to dress down with an open collar and loafers, or up with a tie and pocket square.

Styled for daytime: open collar, cream shirt, and enough ease in the cloth to walk in comfortably.

The construction matches the ambition of the cloth  full canvassing, hand-finished pockets, and a lining chosen to breathe rather than trap heat, so the lightness holds up beyond just the first wear.

Who it’s for?

Lightest suits the client who wants formality without the weight of it: a bespoke wedding suit for a summer ceremony, a groom suit or groomsmen suit for an outdoor engagement suit fitting beforehand, or simply a business suit for the office through the hottest weeks of the year. It sits comfortably next to a tuxedo or custom formal wear at an evening event, but it’s just as suited to daily tailoring  a lighter alternative to a heavier premium suit for anyone who lives in their suit rather than saving it for occasions.

Cut as a single breasted, two-button jacket, it stays close to classic proportions, though we’ve made the same cloth up as a double breasted piece for clients who want more presence. Either way, it’s a cloth for pale, breathable colorways rather than heavy charcoals sky blues, soft greys, warm taupe and it sits alongside our other luxury suit and luxury Italian suit ranges as one of the lightest options we offer.

Built by hand, made to measure

Every made to measure suit we cut starts with a custom suit consultation a conversation about fit, occasion and cloth before anything is marked or cut. From there, a master tailor builds the jacket by hand: a full canvas suit with hand stitched lapels and buttonholes, shaped to the individual rather than adjusted from a block. It’s the same process whether the finished piece is a custom made suit, a hand made suit for a first-time client, or a customized suit built from a pattern we already hold on file for a later alteration.

We work across LoroPiana’s wool, silk and cashmere ranges through the year, and the same care goes into a lady suit or lady shirt as it does into menswear fine cloths like Lightest drape just as well on a tailored women’s jacket. It’s an approach closer to haute couture menswear than off-the-rack production, and it’s why clients come to us for a made to measure suit in Zurich rather than the suits Zurich department stores stock in standard sizes.

Finishing the look

A suit is only half the outfit. We pair Lightest with a long sleeve shirt in cotton or fine poplin, a silk tie or knitted tie for the office, and a neck tie or bow tie with a pocket square for weddings and other formal occasions. For clients building a full wardrobe, we also cut a men’s jacket and men’s trousers separately, offer a slim fit suit trouser alongside more classic cuts, and can make up ready to measure trousers on their own when a jacket isn’t needed. Formal men’s accessories ties, squares, cufflinks are fitted at the same consultation, so the whole look comes together in one visit.
