First impressions count — this statement is no mere cliché, but a well-established fact. Nowhere is the first impression more important than in the workplace. Whether you want to win over a new client, apply for a new position, or meet your colleagues on your first day at work, in each of these situations the first impression is decisive. Although it takes on average only 100 milliseconds for a first impression to form in the mind of the person opposite you, it can be influenced by a few simple tricks. Utmost care is required here, because once an image has formed in the mind of your conversation partner, in many cases it will remain unchanged. The first impression is composed of various factors. These include outward appearance, body language, and also facial expressions and gestures.
The question of the outfit and the first impression
Which outfit is appropriate? This question is one of the most frequently asked when it comes to first impressions. A simple rule of thumb is that a smarter outfit is often the better choice. A flawless outfit is essential here, because when meeting someone for the first time, the smallest blemish is noticed immediately and stored in the subconscious of the person opposite. Of course, that may sound superficial at first, but that is how the human brain works when it comes to first impressions.
For women, a tailored suit is appropriate in many cases; for men, a perfectly fitting suit belongs on the list of must-haves. But beware — not every suit is created equal. Suits, too, harbour many pitfalls. Do not compromise on quality or fit. An individual bespoke suit ensures a flawless look, for example. When it comes to colours, do not reach for black. Anthracite or dark blue are the better choice here.

Observe the behaviour of the person opposite you
Of course, you should not adopt the behaviour of your conversation partner one-to-one, but it can give you valuable clues about the level of familiarity within the conversation. Be open and friendly, because only then can you learn from the behaviour of the person opposite you.
Mind your words
An absolute no-go is speaking badly about former colleagues, superiors or clients. Gossiping does not create closeness, but rather a tense atmosphere. Even if colleagues speak badly about someone on your first day, try not to join in.
Furthermore, you should not become too familiar with new colleagues at your first meeting — after all, you do not yet know which colleagues can be trusted with personal topics. The rule here is: remain open, friendly, and observant, and you will quickly understand the social structures without stepping into any pitfalls.
Do not pretend to be someone you are not
As a newcomer at work, no one expects you to already know everything. The same applies when winning over a new client — you do not know an answer or are unsure? Own up to it. But at the same time, signal that you will find out and provide the missing information later. This shows motivation and goodwill. Showing a human side here creates far more closeness than beating about the bush!
Focus on your voice and body language
As long as you stick to the two rules mentioned above, the content of the first conversation has hardly any influence on the first impression. Body language and voice play a far greater role here. An honest smile, for example, immediately builds a closer bond with the person opposite you.
The handshake should also not be overlooked. Although it lasts only four seconds on average, it nevertheless holds many pitfalls. When shaking hands, aim for the healthy middle ground: it should be neither too limp nor too firm.
Maintain eye contact throughout. Pleasant eye contact suggests interest, self-confidence, and open-mindedness.
Ensure clarity in your voice. Deep breathing into the abdomen provides a strong and relaxed voice. Deep breaths also help you pay attention to deliberate pauses in speech.
As you can see, the first impression is no coincidence — it can and should, in many cases, be positively influenced through conscious preparation and practice. Take the time to work on each individual point listed here and integrate it into your daily life. That way, you will be well equipped for all important first encounters.
